Part A: Determining Cultural Communication Differences (LO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9 – 55 marks)

Task 1: The Analysis (40 marks)

For the assignment you are asked to compare and contrast a selection of different cultural approaches to business communication using Hofstede Dimension Theory.

Your selection of different cultures operating within New Zealand business is to include your own plus 4 others from the list below:

 1 x Asian culture

 1 x Pacific Island Culture (not including New Zealand)

 1 x European or South American culture

 and Maori culture.

(Where the student belongs to one of the nominated cultures, they are asked to choose a further sub-culture within that culture to ensure 5 cultures are analysed.)

For each culture you are asked to explain how they would communicate in business in terms of the following and justify your explanation.

 Masculinity vs. Femininity

 Long-Term vs. Short-Term Orientation

(30 marks – 1 mark per feature per culture)

To support your analysis of each culture you are asked to provide examples of each culture’s impact on different communication formats e.g. reports, meeting, emails, telephone conversations.

(10 marks for examples related to each culture – 2 marks per culture – a minimum of 2 examples pre culture)

Task 2: The Presentation (15 marks)

Present your findings in an oral presentation using powerpoint slides.

The presentation is to be no more than 15 minutes, and is to effectively promote the key differences in communication used by the different cultures in New Zealand business.

Part B: Persuasion and Negotiation Skills (LO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9 –18 marks)

Task 3: Persuasion Skills (9 marks)

Briefly explain how persuasive skills can be used in business to effectively communicate ideas to an audience.

In your explanation you are asked to outline the key persuasive skills used in business, and using examples, briefly explain how they can be used to promote an idea or understanding within different forms of business communication.

(A minimum of 3 different persuasion skills are to be explained and 3 forms of communication are to be included in your explanation.)

(3 marks for each skill = 9 marks)

Task 4: Negotiation Skills (9 marks)

Briefly explain how negotiation skills can be used in business to effectively communicate ideas to an audience.

In your explanation you are asked to outline the key negotiation skills used in business and using examples briefly explain how they can be used to promote an idea, position or opinion within different forms of business communication.

(A minimum of 3 different negotiation skills and 3 different forms of communication are to be included in your explanation.)

(3 marks for each skill = 9 marks
